My coworker ' s grandmother just got on from PR. Two people in her building died because they were on oxygen and the building had no power. I'm sure there are many such stories.
It will take a while to know the true impact, and then to determine which deaths can be attributed to the storm. People are also being sickened by drinking contaminated water, which may lead to further deaths if people don't get clean water soon.
I don't, either. Seems more like it's Puerto Rican officials hiding the numbers to cover their asses and hide their incompetence and corruption.
Have you been there? Much of the population lives in conditions similar to the Brazilian slums. The island has an out of control Iguana population (no natural predators on PR), and one of the most interesting proposals I've heard from PR officials is to farm Iguanas, harvest their meat, and distribute it to the poor for free.
I agree, the body count will go up. But the issue isn't the number -- it's the alleged coverup. FEMA was caught scrubbing their website by the Washington Post.

That meanie Donald Trump ordered up a hurricane to destroy Puerto Rico and now he's killing everyone there because he wants to turn the whole island into a giant golf resort.
So, lets get this straight, a mayor of PR, is in a twitter war with trump, and this mayor can tweet what whatever she wants, and she won't say how many people are dead because she wants to help trump?
So what? There's no reason our tax dollars should be subsidizing Puerto Rico. The government should cut them loose. It should be their country and their problem.

A news outlet interviewed a doctor returning to the mainland: "News media in Puerto Rico suggest that 300 bodies are unprocessed, and scores of people are unaccounted for, likely drowning victims whose bodies have not been found... “There are probably many still undiscovered bodies,” Julio said. “I’m betting 700 to 1,000, but I hope I’m wrong.”
People die every day. You will have to prove they died in the storm and not because of their underlying condition.
