Summer orientation at USAFA 1961, incoming class was asked how many of the 600 were Eagle Scouts. Over 100 stood up. It is a proud and honorable group.
No women in our class then, of course. Isn't this a grand world that has opened up for our girls?

Why can't women make their own version of Eagle Scouts that are just as cool? Why the need for validation from a boys group?
Cub Scout and later Sea Scout:
It simplifies things and allows for concentrating on the scouting skills and not having to worry about boy/girl issues.
Because all the 11 years old kids cant be in close proximity of the opposite sex without screwing like rabbits? I thought scouting was suppose to be teaching them respect, self control, leadership and values?
How is it they are able to attend school together?
Girl Scouts is a boring organization compared to the Boy Scouts, if you're the kind of girl who wants to go camping and climb an achievement ladder. Also I've heard that in recent years the Girl Scouts have become very political, in a predictably left direction.
There was, and may still be, an organization affiliated with the Boy Scouts called Explorers that was open to teen boys and girls. The girls who participated in my high adventure trips were Explorers, and they complained that the Girl Scouts were boring and moribund at older ages.
Of course that prompts the question, "Why are the Girl Scouts less fun, for an outdoorsy person, than the Boy Scouts?"
There is nothing holding back the Girl Scouts from becoming more like the Boy Scouts.
In reality, the Boy Scouts will become more like the Girl Scouts as a result of this change. And I'm sure that's part of some people's agendas, to kill both organizations by sucking the fun out of them.
When I heard this I knew conservatives' heads would be exploding. When you actually look at it closer and objectively however, I don't see what the big fuss is about.

Would one need to be conservative to want a traditionally male group to stay male?
I don't understand this decision. Girls can earn the Gold Award which is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout designation.
Most of you know how I feel about gender equality but there is something to be said for gender specific groups too.
