Ironically, the thread title is not an honest representation of the topic. The article is about individual Chinese scientists who fake peer reviews to get published in leading journals because the stakes are so high for them to do so, not about any Chinese government plot to cheat the world.
At least China doesn't have the level of ideological opposition to science that exists in the U.S.
Yeah, just cultural and traditional opposition. Every country has their problems.
China's real problem is there is so much competition and pressure to be the best, some are willing to try to "cheat" to get there. But that intense competition is creating a lot of real results too. China has caught up and is now one of the top countries in many scientific and technological areas. Corruption and cheating is a serious problem in China and isn't going away anytime soon.
There is a Chinese saying, "if you do not cheat, you will be cheated," I've also heard, "If you can cheat, then cheat." Sums up Chinese mentality pretty well. Obviously, not everyone thinks that way, but it's pretty common.

Well..I titled it such because of the heavy govt. involvement in science. A good part of the pressure noted is govt. driven.
I also believe that the Chinese govt. has allowed questionable research to fly because of the possibility of international prestige accruing to China
I allow that it could be seen as ironic..ahhh welll.
China is going through growing pains. China absolutely will be a technical powerhouse over the next 100 years. You'll even see tons of westerners moving to China to bring their research because the west continues to gut their academic research while China keeps dumping billions into it.
Right now China is the undisputed king in fields like quantum communication. They're going to get better and it isn't like the Chinese themselves aren't aware that they have a problem with fraud. Growing pains.
Faking: making counterfeits of name brands fashion bags, using fake ingredients in food, plagiarizing scholarly ideas (not saying there aren't a lot in the U.S., but if a Chinese plagiarizes an article written in English and publishes it only in China, it will take some other Chinese who has read the original paper to discover that)...
As quoted at the end of the article:
Quote:
“We need to work harder to develop a culture of integrity.”
Currently, it's a culture of faking.
Maybe it will become a scientific superpower, albeit a fake one. ("hey, so what?")
