Every day, Americans see hundreds of ads on TV and radio, in newspapers and magazines, on billboards and smartphones. North Americans post to Facebook something like a billion times a day, and during the election many of those messages were about politics. Facebook typically runs about $40 million worth of advertising a day in North America.
Then consider the scale of American presidential elections.
Hillary Clinton’s total campaign budget, including associated committees, was $1.4 billion. Mr. Trump and his allies had about $1 billion. Even a full $100,000 of Russian ads would have erased just 0.025% of Hillary’s financial advantage. In the last week of the campaign alone, Mrs. Clinton’s super PAC dumped $6 million in ads into Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
He's wrong. How much impact it had, no one can tell for sure, but they sure tried to discredit Hillary and boost Trump's numbers.
It has come out that there was a training school in Russia where people were recruited and trained to go onto places like Facebook and other social media sites for the sole purpose of damaging Hillary. This is a proven fact. They spread all kinds of rumors designed to discredit her.

I never even knew facebook was a news site.
Never seen a facebook news article in my life.
And if they really do have news, what kind of person goes there for news?

None of your facebook friends shared any political facebook links during the election. Really?

It doesn't have to be 'news' to go viral.
They just proved what political morons they are by what they "like" or "share" with me. If a Facebook story is enough to sway your political compass then you don't really believe what you believe anyway.
Information shared through social networks is very powerful (regardless of the information's accuracy). Especially if it agrees with a worldview or some preconceived notion/conclusion (e.g. "See! I told you!", "This is what we all have been thinking", etc.).
I'm somewhat confused that this has to be explained.
There is certainly a debate to be had about the degree to which fake news affected people's voting, but I think it is naive to assume it had no effect.
