Mr Johnson's mother, Cowanda Jones-Johnson, told the Washington Post that she was in the car during the call, and that "President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband."
For me it would remind me that my husband was doing what he loved.
He still should have waited until next week to make these phone calls.
I can understand that.
My brother told me the same thing. He said if he died, I don't have to cry for him, just remember he died of doing what he signed up for. (he could have used different words, I don't remember) I lost several of my best friends, I tell myself everyday that they died for good cause, they knew what they got themselves into. Somehow, the pain becomes a little bit tolerable. Not everyone grieves the same way.
I asked several of my veteran friends what they thought about Trump's remark, they did not seem so offended by it.
In all fairness, I wouldn't have said "your husband knew what he signed up for". When dealing with a grieving widow, sometimes, less is more.
Without hearing what he actually said, Ill reserve judgment. One sentence out of a conversation can be taken out of context.
When we enlist to serve our country we all know what we are signing up for. We all know that if called to action that it may result in loss of our lives. That is the sacrifice every member of the military accepts. Trump was correct in his statement. It may not bring peace to the widow or make her feel appreciated, but it is the reality.
Can't wait for the transcript to go something like, "These special forces guys are amazing. They know what they are getting in to, it's why they sign-up. To do the things normal people can't do. And why its such a loss when we lose one."
