As I wrote earlier, "He knew what he signed up for" is a compliment to the soldier, a way of saying he was a brave professional who chose to do a dangerous job, knowing the risks to his own safety.
It wasn't a compliment to a grieving widow. Remember, this was said to a widow.
It's been pretty well established that Trump is a steaming pile of S when it comes to being sensitive to the plight of the (real) working class. Anyone who has watched him evolve as a television personality over the years should understand, with an extreme level of clarity, how much he dislikes poor people, working poor, black, hispanic, muslim, etc.
"he knew what he signed up for ...but when it happens it hurts anyway" - Trump to Myeshia Johnson
"..we can't bring your husband back" - Obama to Donna Coates
"My heart goes out to you," Obama told Coates, "because we can't bring your husband back. I don't in any way want to sugarcoat the fact of significant problems in the VA. You have a system of bureaucracy that's overwhelmed."
You left out key parts of the quote from Obama.....selective -- oh surprise!!!!! And you left out that it was not in a phone call to console her -- two women approached him and this was in the moment real interaction. Not the same at all as sitting at a desk with the luxury of knowing what you are going to say and who is going to be on the other end.
Trump fans and critics know that Trump said it -- not meaning to be mean -- but because he has no empathy, compassion, warmth, sincerity. It is true -- every soldier knows the risks -- it's not something you remind a Gold Star family about when the body is just coming home. It was the wrong thing to say.
It happens too often with him.
