I think we learned during the pre and post prohibition era of this country that criminalizing the demand for mood or mind altering substances leads to the growth of underground economies in poor communities and violence as a means of gaining market share or dealing with debt or wrongs. This prolonged violence changes the culture in these poor communities to see violence as a means for solving problems.

If you really want to talk about reducing violence......you really are talking about eliminating or legalizing drugs. I mean.....when you see the type money that these drug crews make....and the amount of violence they dish out.....you would be astounded.

Detroit is a city of "Road Runners", who branch out to different states and cities selling pills, heroin, cocaine. Drug dealing is a billion dollars a year industry and is directly or indirectly the cause of the majority of the violence. St Louise has ALWAYS been a violent city and always have been in the top 5 it seems like. When nobody is willing to back down.....its always going to end in high murder rates. What you have is people who define themselves by the street code. There whole reputation is wrapped up in in and they cannot back down and always have to shoot.

DC and Atlanta also have something else going for it: Gentrification. Some suburban areas have higher murder rates than the city proper.

And even with those Democratic cities, you can find cities with low murder rates. Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, Denver, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Madison, Columbus(Ohio), Boston, Raleigh.

The Bay Area in general, most cities have low murder rates. It is only Oakland, Richmond, and Vallejo that have issues with high murder rates.
