As people with problems in need of healing? Or as bad people who need to be punished?

Many of us would say both, but if you had to choose one, which would you lean towards?

Yes, this is massively oversimplifying a complex issue, but there's only so much nuance a poll can capture.

How do you *generally* view people who've committed crimes?
Everyone has committed a crime.

It both scares and saddens me that there are so many people out there who just don't seem to give a crap--about their own lives or anyone else's. It's not a good sign.

you could throw in an "other" option and have the person explain their vote.

i believe there are evil people in this world, and they are going to commit crimes because it is in their nature to.

i also believe that there are people that are "broken" for one reason or another, and commit crimes of passion.

the people in those two categories need to be punished for their crimes. the broken people though can possibly be rehabilitated over time, if they are willing.

in your third choice, there are no victimless crimes. a lot of people convicted of drug offenses, have to get their money from somewhere, and often times they commit crimes to get that money to support their habit. so there is a victim somewhere. however these people can also be rehabilitated, again if they are willing.

the people that can be rehabilitated, have to want to be rehabilitated, you cant force it on people. all you can do is make the offer, and keep tht offer open, and wait for them to come to you for rehabilitation.

All different levels of crimes. Serial killers don't get any sympathy from me. Raping and killing women and children. Let them fry.

Now if someone is shop lifting because they are hungry , different story all together.

How exactly do you know that *many of us would say both*?
Do you know the thoughts of everyone?
If you do not then you cannot truthfully state that you know exactly what *many* would say.
The issue of committing crimes is not complex, it is actually very simple.
When one commits a crime they should be punished to the full extent of the law, no deals, no making the charges a lesser offense.
See how simple that is?

Some people need to be in prison for the good of society, e.g. serial rapists, murderers, pedophiles. I'm less worried about "punishing" them as I'm concerned with protecting innocent citizens from them.

I don't think any of your answers match my feelings/views.

Some crimes are idiotic, some are vile, some are barely considered crimes, some shouldn't be considered crimes.

Agree. Depends on the crime.
