And yet the GOP-led Congress wants to cut the budget for senior programs.
"But the pain won’t stop with Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. In order to pay for trillions in tax cuts, the GOP will have to come after other programs that benefit older Americans, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for poor seniors and people with disabilities, home heating assistance, and funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which would hamper research into Alzheimer’s, cancer, and chronic diseases."
"Last year, 24 percent of the budget, or $916 billion, paid for Social Security, which provided monthly retirement benefits averaging $1,360 to 41 million retired workers in December 2016.
...
Four health insurance programs — Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace subsidies — together accounted for 26 percent of the budget in 2016, or $1 trillion. Nearly three-fifths of this amount, or $594 billion, went to Medicare, which provides health coverage to around 57 million people who are over age 65 or have disabilities."
I know that people believe otherwise, but:
"About 9 percent of the federal budget in 2016, or $366 billion, supported programs that provide aid (other than health insurance or Social Security benefits) to individuals and families facing hardship."
Who are all these people on welfare living in luxury?
Because, most folks I've ever met on welfare are living in projects or Section 8 housing, none of which is luxurious.
Most poorer old folks I know live in houses they bought while they were working and those houses are paid for. They're on fixed incomes, but they don't live in squalor.
I'm really fascinated by this concept of welfare families living like kings.

It's Medicaid. Totally free for those on it, no FICA need have ever been paid. Now look at those stats by race. See if you notice what's going on.
Welfare abuse is a cottage industry to certain segments of the population.
That includes the elderly in nursing homes, doncha know.
"Medicaid plays a huge role in providing for elderly Americans who have, in effect, outlived their savings. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation show that in 2015, 62% of the more than 1.3 million Americans in skilled-nursing facilities paid for their stay and care with Medicaid dollars. Medicare, the program for the elderly, covered only 14% of them."

Me too.
FWIW my mom was on welfare when I was a young child. We were lucky in that my grandmother owned homes she let my mother live in (grandma didn't approve of my mom's life choices but didn't want her grandchildren growing up in public housing - which I am eternally grateful for) and I remember not having food to eat and being hungry. We also frequently went without utilities - gas, lights, water, etc. We had to go over to other people's houses to take baths. We didn't have any sort of nice things, we mostly shopped at Goodwill. My mom didn't have a car so we took the bus everywhere and where we lived the bus stops weren't convenient so most of my early childhood I remember walking long distances and my feet/legs hurting and eating potatoes and grilled cheese sandwiches made with "government cheese" for dinner.
Yes, the left continues to float falsehoods that 'poor people vote against their own interests by voting for Republicans'. The truth is that the underclass votes overwhelmingly Democrat and always has, when they vote. They know that keeping their welfare demands keeping the Democrats in control and the Democrats know their best chance of keeping some power is keeping poor people poor!
How is it a falsehood?
It is the GOP-led Congress that wants to cut programs that aid the impoverished elderly - you know, the group that the OP is advocating for in this thread.
I'm willing to bet that some large percentage of those who would be impacted also voted Republican because, well, that's what people in that age group tend to do.
How is voting for the people who want to take away what little benefit you may receive in the form of home heating help or Meals-on-Wheels and the like not voting against your own self-interests?
Obama hates the elderly. No cola ,cost of living raise given to SS recipients for a few years. Yet welfare recipients got a raise. The old people are getting squeezed like never before. Every year the seniors got a raise since SS began. Under Obama it was the first time ever they got nothing .
Hmmm...
The GOP must hate the elderly just as much.
Have you seen the programs that they want to cut from the budget?

Well, tell all those rural Trump supporters who have been abusing the disability and welfare systems for generations to get off their butts!
I am a conservative, but this topic is always hard for me.
I think most of us are fortunate enough that we don't need government assistance. I know two families who rely on foodstamp to feed their families and the adults in the families are constantly working. It makes me believe that many families are just working poor.
There is no shame in being poor. Being poor is the natural state of all human beings everywhere. Being wealthy enough to be self-sufficient is usually a combination of more factors than simply earning enough money and not spending too much of it on unnecessary things.
If they really need help/assistance, I am willing to use my tax dollars to help them. They have to be American citizens and legal residence. (race/gender don't matter either)
I think we should be cracking down on welfare fraud and give the help to people who really need them.
This. I have huge sympathy for Willy Walmartworker. Not so much for Carl Couchpotato.
