Economically we are basically a socialist state. We are taxed everywhere on everything. Gas, Food, Property, etc..
The US is a capitalist country taxes have nothing to do with it. Start worrying when people demand the means of production become democratically controlled.

We have been conditioned to believe we are all millionaires-in-waiting. The one percent need to keep everyone believing that. It's what keeps all those good little workers toiling away their lives working for crumbs while the plutocracy takes the lion's share of the fruits of their labor.

I actually used to be a conservative libertarian type but experiences in the working world and reading alot about history have convinced me that socialism is the moral choice for the majority of people.
Wow I don't know where you live, but in my area I know plenty of democrats who have been on unemployment. Many by choice, taking voluntary layoffs during hunting season. Government programs are in fact often abused and misused.
I begrudge anyone one who cheats the system.
The single mom example you used. I don't begrudge her, unless she is the one who keeps getting pregnant from multiple fathers without concern for who needs to pay to feed and raise those children. Lets not pretend that such people are uncommon. I also begrudge the sperm donors for not being responsible men.
Back on topic.
I never met a self made millionaire who is lazy. The ones I know work 80 hour plus weeks and devote themselves to their businesses often at the expense of of anything resembling a family life. No I don't begrudge them, but I don't envy them either.
I was in the ATlanta suburbs at the time. I really have only known of two families using social programs in the 20 years I have lived in the states. As I said -- I'm fortunate....really fortunate.
I believe that welfare recipients are not more liberal or more conservative. It depends on where you live.
But to believe that one is more likely than the other is naive and just satisfying a narrative that one has created.
