An American woman was unceremoniously thrown in jail in Zimbabwe on Saturday because police say she is behind a Twitter account which mocks the country's president even though someone else has taken credit for it and continues to goad the leader from it.
Martha O'Donovan, 25, was arrested on Friday morning at her home in Harare, Zimbabwe, by police who accused her of being behind a tweet posted by anonymous Twitter user @matigary on October 11.
Really strange considering the last article about Zimbabwe. She may not have done it but it's stupid she would go there in the first place.
Pretty funny that the content of the tweet is excruciatingly similar to the content of a typical trump tweet. Guess the little people just can't get away with what the elite get away with.
I'm all for free expression, etc., but will follow the rules of a foreign destination when I'm present. For instance, when traveling through Turkey and knowing what I knew about Turkish law, I would never dream of talking/writing trash about then Prime Minister and current President Erdogan.
I don't understand how some people expect to have all the protections of free speech that we have here in the U.S. while in another country. If they're smart enough to travel the world on their own, you'd think they're smart enough, and respectful enough, to honor the country with which they're visiting by their laws, rules, and customs. But when I see stories like this I know it just ain't so.
