Japan does a reasonable job with background checking which can take weeks/ months to complete. A physical and mental health exam is required. The applicant is subjected to multiple LE interrogations. Current, prior employers are interviewed. Neighbors, friends and family members are interviewed. People are not permitted to own semi or fully automatic weapons.

Unlike the US, Japan's database is not dependent upon input from 3000+ counties and Police Departments within and/ or multiple branches of the military.

Most of the mass shooters in the US would not likely have been able to pass a background check in Japan.

Because the process is lengthily and costly, most people don't try in Japan and most people do not own firearms. The population does not live in fear of eachother and people don't feel the need to protect themselves.

Unlike the US, Japan does not grant its people a constitutional right to unlimited firearms. Instead, Japan grants all people Universal Healthcare which is ranked top 3 for efficiency in the world. In contrast, the US is ranked # 47, after Iran.

Politicians in Japan do not pose with firearms or whip pistols out from their pockets from at rallies to appeal to a minority of voters who own firearms.

There is a procedure to amend the constitution IF you can get enough like minded people.

If the second bolded is true then you should have no problem going through the proper procedure,,,,,,,,,

Talk about skewing the numbers.
Why should such shootings be excluded?

I think we can all agree that there is a huge difference in what happened today in Texas and what no doubt happened in these inner cities where one gang banger shot a rival.

The thing is the gun grabbers will never agree but we all know that if those who are intent on evil will find a way to kill. What if the shooter today didn't have a gun but instead he burst open the church doors and threw in a couple of pipe bombs or molotov cocktails? What if he had waited until church let out and he was waiting to run his truck onto the sidewalk and over people?

There is no stopping evil but the neighbor that shot back at the mass shooter... what if he didn't have a rifle?
What if the shooter did not have a firearm?

No shortage of people in the US who live in fear of eachother and rationalize their need for firearms.

A tiny portion of people seem to fantasize they will one day be the good guy with a gun.

The horse has long left the barn in the US. We will trend increasingly violent and gun ownership will likely increase. It's circular.

The US is the third most populous country in the world.

No shortage of whack jobs in the rest of the world. It tends to be a tad tougher in the rest of the developed world to acquire a firearm, thus a fraction of mass shootings.

In Japan, one probably does not have to worry about their neighbor shooting them.

They might, however, have to worry about their neighbor committing suicide and accidently offing their neighbor in the process.

The Japanese do not have the perfect answer.

The "good" thing is they have found how to do it without guns, right?

Apples and oranges.

As far as I know, there's no secret sauce to figuring out if someone is mentally stable. Only until after the fact when the commit a crime is when we figure it out since we have documented proof. So... the whole mental illness argument doesn't work.. practically speaking. Restricting weapons however, is an easier solution and more practical. As all it takes is regulation/ATF to go in and start removing weapons out of civilian circulation.
If all the mass shooters in the US were subjected to the intensive background check/ processes that is used in Japan, it's likely most would have been weeded out, assuming they even tried.

The inability to acquire/ own a semi/ fully automatic firearm would likely eliminate most of the spectacular mass shootings. It would also contribute to agreater odds for the good guys with guns to retire the bad guys with guns.

The U.S. has a cultural problem in our inner cities. That is where the vast majority of violent crime happens. Homogeneous societies like Japan can not be compared to the U.S. Solve our cultural city problems, and solve most of the violent crime. Until politicians are willing to do something about that we will continue to have violent crime.
