I think it is so sad, to have people in this country that is considered a "super power", on the verge of starvation or so poor that they have to rely on food banks.
Life can deal you just one blow and usually it is something medically, like the lady in the article with Cystic Fibrosis or the elderly who can have numerous complaints. This one blow can send you reeling; you can't work, you lose your job, you can't manage your bills etc, etc, etc. Hint, hint to the government to do something about the poor excuse for health care in this country.
I wonder how many of those people sitting in line in their cars called their four wheels home.
It's easy to sit and tell someone to "go get a job". Seen how many people are being laid off lately around the country? Try supporting a child or two on a minimum wage then have a medical crisis, and believe me kids come with a lot of bumps, breaks and brusies that have you running to the ER.

I'd like to thank Danny De Vol and all the other volunteers who are out there helping those who are a less fortunate or have hit on hard times.

I thought this was telling :

.... Ok. You need to read that section again, in detail.

DeVol is the retired businessman who RUNS the food pantry. The article said that HE was sifting through the food, checking out what was available to give. He said "most people will get bread, a few cans of carrots, beans, peas and, on this day, peaches or apricots and some smaller incidentals." That means he's picking the food that he's giving out.

And it's sift. Not shift.

It is sad, I saw on the news yesterday where long haul truck drivers said that they are not able to make it. They said it cost's them $1000.00 to fill their rigs and some are just going to have to shut down. The economy has hit a lot of families hard. If people would realize that for most of these people they have no choice but to turn to food banks, and for those that have not fallen on hard times, should say "there but for the grace of God, go I. For those that critize those that are daily becoming America's poor don't say that it can never happen to you.

Go google what's going on in Africa, a poor country to begin with, but with these high food/energy costs even more so now. If we are seeing this in a first world country..imagine the third world countries right about now.

And the likes of Walmart refuse to raise their prices to cover these increases making the producers/truckers absorb the costs. Remember, Walmart sells for the "absolute lowest price". Do you think Walmart is eating the increase ?

Those truckers interviewed mentioned that also. Of course Walmart is not eating the increase. Soon there will be no middle class (although I sometimes wonder if there is now and what qualifies it) but it will be down to the Rich and Poor, so if there is such a thing as middle class, we will then become the poor

For those who don't feel remorse and don't want to sound demonic, please read the following:

Waiting In The Food Line, Scott Pelley Reports On Those Who Need Help To Get Groceries - CBS News

This is what is evil. The fact that these people and others across this great country are being let down by its own government.

"The kids are on a free school lunch program and, often, 12-year-old Shane brings part of that meal home." How sad is this!?!

we don't live in a socialist govt. So why is the govt evil for this? We excepted this way of life for years until things get bad, then everyone wants to cry.

I think a few of the people on this thread need to have a bit more compassion. I live in an area similar to that town (poor) and have a neighbor who has multiple sclerosis (bad) and is on partial disability and goes to a food bank. I don't think she is sponging off anyone. And I am thankful that I do not have to do this (although I am far from wealthy). One never really knows what curves life will throw.
