The real story is that people are increasingly displeased with both major parties and more and more people are registering as Independent or Unaffiliated. I know OP didn't write the headline title, but the impression it gives doesn't do a good job of depicting the bigger picture.

Me thinks a Large number of Americans are sick of both the Republicans and Democrats, they spend more time attacking each other, running for re-election, and pandering to Lobbyists, to do their job. Yup! And this has been going on for quite some time, with a massive number of folks now identifying as unaffiliated.
As a nation we are identifying less with political parties, which is not a bad thing at all.
