Anyone that is in college should be intelligent enough to know your "rights" as an American end when you travel to another country.
Student athletes. Technically in college but the bar is way lower for entry into college if you are a student athlete.

Why would UCLA care about three students who engaged in criminal behavior and embarrassed their team, school and country by acting like dirtbags?

Because the athletic department brings in millions to the university as well as endowments from wealthy alum. These three students are much more important than an average student at the university. Plus one of them is Lavar Ball's kid. Google Lavar ball.

This is a hard lesson that these kids will learn. Best case scenario for them, is the fact that theyve already been scared straight, knowing that these people aren't playing around and that their star status means nothing over there. Work case scenario is that they will serve time. Either way, they will have learned the hard way that you can't go to a country like China and get away with that. There have been enough examples of people committing crimes/disrespecting local cultures overseas to know that it's not a smart idea.

Regardless of star status and endowments, UCLA isn't going to get involved with this. They will completely defer to China. There's really nothing they can do other than offer support at this point.

The question was why would UCLA care about three students. My response was not all students are equal. If you know anything about college athletes you would know that. As far as what happens. To think that money does not talk is foolish. They will get a slap on the wrist and go home.

China is known for very little crime. Perhaps we need to do this. 10 years in prison for shoplifting. My guess shoplifting arrests would go way down with this sort of penalty.

Regarding the UCLA players. My guess is they will be released and not charged.

My only thought here is why is the NCAA having games in China? I know 1 billion people. But is this really necessary?
college students play basketball games around the world every year. selected teams travel to other countries to play in the preseason. it generally promotes good will around the world, as long as the student athletes dont do something stupid like commit a crime while in another country.

UCLA does not need to directly get involved. UCLA will ask for help from the feds. Congress, the white house whatever. They are not going to stand idly by. Plus you have Lavar Ball in the mix. He has a reality show following him and his family around china.

Bringing these teams over to play in China is a PR thing for China imprisoning US college kids is not good PR.
