Its time for the USA to expand out to 55-60 states. Simply put, the people are under represented now.

1. Hawaii was the 50th state added in 1959. USA population was 178,000,000
2. In 2017, USA population is 330,000,000
3. This has been the longest we have gone in our nation's history without a new state being added.
4. It is ok to have states divided based on culture, politics, etc. That is how the people are best represented.
5. Thus it is ok to change things up. And break states up to get better representation. Northern Virginia is not compatible with the rest of Virginia. The Northern VA counties and cities should break off and join Washington DC and the southern Maryland counties and become a state. Obviously their interests is to serve residents who work in gov't related jobs. While the rest of VA might not have those interests. (New Columbia, Virginia)
6. New York should break between the city and upstate. Tapanzee bridge is a good dividing line. Obviously a conflict there. (New York, New Amsterdam)
7. Northern California and Southern Oregan can become Jefferson and not have the interests of LA, San Fran, and Portland in the way.

Maybe could make cases for partition in other states too. Just not sure how to go about this legally. The USA needs a shake up to help better represent its citizens. Also the federal government is too powerful. The Federal government had two main repsonbilities at the formation of the nation: 1) common national defense 2)common currency. Aside from that the states had jurisdiction. Most tax money back then went to the states, not the feds. Now its just insane the beuraracy we got going now.

I think I am speaking from a practical point of view. Not "left" or "right"

I don't believe states should be divided up. It's just another gerrymandering trick.

it would require an act of congress to divide states up into smaller ones, and you can bet that they dont have the willingness to do that. heck right now they cant even get consensus to pass a budget and make real spending cuts.

No. Add the existing territories as states, but that's it. Everything else is just the result of awful gerrymandering. Acres don't vote, people do. Get it through your thick skulls, Republicans.

I got no problem with gerrymandering. It gets a bad rap. Its a way for people to get represented better and one of the last ways states and influence the federal gov't.

Very good point. Expect that to be part of the GOP platform in 2030.

Or just appointment more Senators to represent the population adequately. Cali could get 5-8 senators.

No?
