The California chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is demanding that Congress get rid of the national anthem for lyrics it says are anti-black—the latest race-based dispute over the country's main secular hymn.
The group is pushing two resolutions through Congress that would do away with the national anthem which they say is “one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon” and find a replacement.
Imo it was a stupid choice anyway for the national anthem since it is about the war of 1812 and sung to a British drinking tune.
A better choice would have been America the Beautiful since it is about the country as a whole.
Not really saying we should get rid of the current anthem though, just that imo I think there were better choices anyway.
Even white folks have said for years that it was a super stupid choice long before most black folks even cared about the full content about the anthem.
The first time I read the whole thing in high school, I thought it was laughable.
Everybody wants to get their name or the name of their group in the news. I am really tired of all the whining coming from everyone. Everyone is a "victim" these days. It takes effort to not be a victim, more than whining after the fact and expecting everyone to drop to their knees to catch your tears! Oh, boo-hoo.
I don't even know the lyrics. Something about bombs bursting in air. Never did like the tune though. Unsingable unless you have a vocal range like Pavarotti. Would be fine with me to change it to America the Beautiful.
