I don't think this thread went the way OP intended.
Maybe it's reverse psychology. The OP is wanting us to think about the student loan issue.
But seriously, it is wrong to change the rules now. The deduction isn't much and the gross income limit doesn't help, but is a deduction nonetheless. College is already exceedingly expensive. No need to make it worse.
I would favor all deductions be eliminated, substitute a flat tax, same % for all, as in people and corps, and all people file as individuals. No filing as married, no counting dependents. Those personal decisions should not change your tax liability in any way.

The tax rate would have to be pretty low for the middle class to benefit from that.
I don't know any students who are taking luxury foreign vacations and spending hundreds a month on coffee, and neither do you
Lol...not me either....I have student loans and every dime went to books and classes. I don't know a single person who used that money for " luxury vacations".
Translation: I prefer that people not go to college because I fear they'll get smart and increase their odds of voting for democrats
So they major in Humanities or Fine Arts, then have to take out a huge amount of loans, graduate in four years with huge debt, and are out of work or stuck at a greasy fast food joint.
