When Papa John's blamed its poor performance on protesting NFL players, several things happened: Papa John's faced backlash on social media and late night shows, and Neo Nazis named Papa John's the official pizza of the alt-right. Other pizza chains piled on, noting that their sales were just fine.
After suffering the loss of pro-protest customers as well as having to distance itself from Neo Nazis, Papa John's issued the following correction on Twitter:
The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That definitely was not our intention. (1/3)
We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players’ movement to create a new platform for change. We also believe together, as Americans, we should honor our anthem. There is a way to do both. (2/3)
We will work with the players and league to find a positive way forward. Open to ideas from all. Except neo-nazis — 🖕those guys. (3/3)
A lot of people boycotted this prick when he could have raised his prices a dime per pizza to pay for Obamacare but instead whined and cried like a little you know what. That's when I quit buying his crap pizza and have not eaten there since. Good that he was forced to acknowledge his mistake but the damage is done. Let the Neo Nazi's and Trumpers enjoy that garbage.
There is talk that the original statement was released due to pressure from Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys, who owns over 100 franchises and has also been critical of the league's handing of the anthem protests. Further, Jones is part owner of Legends, a stadium marketing company that works closely with a number NFL teams and facilities in selling naming rights, suite sales, et al which may suffer more than other owners if NFL viewership drops. Lastly, he's no fan of Roger Godell who is negotiating a new contract and Jones is not on the compensation committee leaving him out of the final decision.
Jerry Jones only got involved because 1) he's a friend of Trump and 2) he's mad about the Ezekiel Elliott suspension.
He can't say that though so he tries to mask his dissatisfaction with the excuse that he doesn't like how Goodell has handled the player protests.
