The fact that teachers have to purchase classroom materials at their own personal expense is a national embarrassment.
The fact that we spend more per student than nearly every other western country and have such abysmal results is the national embarrassment.

You're barking up the wrong tree, the football and basketball programs at these larger schools not only fund themselves but fund a whol lot of other things like many of the women's sports programs that do not generate much revenue.
Hmm, where are these teachers located? I'm just asking because for my kid's entire school careers I have been asked to not only buy my kid's supplies, but also many other items that might be needed in the classrooms. Kleenex, paper towels, crayons, markers, notebook paper, construction paper, copy paper, glue, the list goes on and on and on. Any science projects which required materials I received a note from the teachers with a list of stuff to buy for my children's projects. So seriously, what are these teachers paying for out of pocket?.......
Notice that much on your list used to be considered must haves. School boards have slowly declared many of them nonessential even though the adopted curriculum specifies their use (construction paper, glue, etc.)
What do teachers buy?
Copy paper
Toilet paper
Hand sanitizer
Everything on your list because some parents send their kids to school with absolutely nothing
Field trips, for the previous reason
Lunch for some kids, same as above reason
Crutches. I gave a kid a set. He could barely walk and his parents refused to take him to the doctor. Yes, it was also a mandatory report.
Winter coats, mittens, etc.
AP test fees
Chalk/markers for the boards
US flag, school ran out of them
Printer ink
Virus protection for the school supplied laptop which came without it
Baby crib, kid was going to have her baby and it was going to sleep in a cardboard box on the floor. I later had the baby now an 11th grader in class
Bulletin board stuff (bulletin boards being an extremely important part of teacher evaluation)
Sticky traps for mice, school system didn't pay the supplier so the order was suspended

Look to the cost breakdown. Special Ed is a huge component of the per pupil cost. One kid in outplacement, and I'll bet your system has 3 or 4, is $300K/year.
A one on one aide is likely a $30K/year, or more, loaded cost. I had classes over the years where I had a one on one in every class.
They're trying to simplify the tax code so it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out how much you should be paying. 99% of the teachers in the country will be getting a large tax cut, it will more than make up for whatever supplies they feel as though they need. How many teachers do you think itemize anyway? and how much are they paying someone to do it?
