I can see why NY is first. We are taxed to death. Downstate we have such a high cost of living its ridiculous. Upstate there are no jobs. Literally, no jobs. People are running fast and not looking back. I do think though that there will always be people to take the place of those who flee. Just like all our retirees head to Florida, new young people willing to fork over the dough take their spots. Not sure about upstate though.
I left in '94-taxes were one of the main reasons. The politics there were bad at that time, but not nearly as moronic as now. Highest taxes in the nation (particularly property taxes), high crime, crap roads, poor schools, insane regulations, crazy number of ticket writers. But some of the highest paid (and quantity) taxpayer supported employees in the nation. Leaving NY state was one of the best decisions of my life. Waiting till I was 32 to do so was one of the worst.
Yes, public sector unions are a real problem, and a huge conflict of interest. They have been gaining ground, while private sector unions are going the way of the Dodo. The public unions get sweetheart deals from the Democrat politicians in return for their monetary, and election support. The huge salaries, benefits, and pensions can not be sustained by cities, and states.
In NY both parties cow tow to police unions. I guess the GOP likes the bully boys. The GOP tends to have a more adversarial relationship with the teachers but rarely take them head on.

That's upstate. Long Island is still doing well in the mid to high end neighborhoods. You put a house up for sale, somebody buys it. Even with $10K+ in property taxes. You put a new house up for 750K, $25K in property taxes..somebody buys that too.
Some people like to use questionable statistics to show that the decline of union representation has been a big factor on the decline of the middle class and the economy in general.
If unions are and were in fact really good for the economy why are the majority of states with the highest union representation losing population the most and why are many of the historically heavily union represented cities in such poor condition economically with crumbling infrastructures?
They only proof is that the middle class was made by Unions and with their demise so goes the Middle class .
