Like many people, I became less Liberal and more Conservative as I got older.

LOL. You guys were annoying as hell when you were young rebellious dudes and when you got older and people were no longer amused, you all became staunch conservatives. You all discovered "responsibility" and all that as an adult.

IMO it's just trying to appeal to the peer group as it ages. I think it is probably a natural evolution in many ways (kids and mortgages and such) but I tend to see the same obnoxious guy flying opposite colors.

If you're not a liberal when you're 25 you have no heart. If you're not a conservative when you're 35 you have no brain.

They could have just said one word: "Fear"

If they were going to add to that, it would be "deference to authority whether or not that authority follows the laws or the constitution or norms"......

This is know as Authoritarianism.

Fear is a funny thing - it manifests in all sorts of novel behavior. For example:

"I love where I live and prefer to go to the bar, hunting, etc".
(translation could be: "I'm scared of flying and in experiencing new cultures so I'm not leaving America")

"I know how to fix most things in the house and car"
(translation: "going back to school and learning the foundations of philosophy isn't in my future")

"I'm married and have a couple kids"
(And it's very clear who is Boss is every way")

"I like Beer"
(I've always wondered what mind-expanding drugs do but - heck - beer feels OK and why take the chance?)

Our entire brain "fight or flight" is built on fear. The problem is that we don't have a lot of the same situations today and so we have to take those feelings and transpose them elsewhere.

My guess is more world travelers are liberal while more preppers are conservative.

There might be something to it. But lefties do seem fearful of softer things, like hurt feelings. Righties are afraid of different things, like losing personal rights. But everyone is afraid of something.

It is interesting there are different parts of the brain to represent broad social connectedness and tight social connectedness. Seems a little suspect they could be so distinguished.

Of course there are no absolutes. Parenting and community have a LOT to do with it - but those things install programming into our brains also.

DNA, tho, IMHO is the ultimate determination. I have check my ancestors back to about 1600 so far and find few "conservatives" in the sense of the current GOP, Nazi's, etc.

In fact, they were always running from the "Republicans" of the past. Not a policeman, captain, military leader, etc - although we do have some town fathers, learned religious figures, etc.

When you're young, broke and idealistic, it's easy to have an "eat the rich" outlook on life.

But as you get older and make something out of your life, you start to be more concerned about protecting you and yours.

Make a little money and it doesn't take long to realize that the Left's definition of "rich" is more than a little open to interpretation and all of a sudden you're on the menu.
