I always thought the appeal of the flat earth society was in the challenge of making a plausible and logical sounding argument in favor of an idea that was demonstrably untrue.

A good way of putting it. I thought it was more of a joke-type appeal to some people.
However, we do have this article from a few days ago:
I will say, this man has put forward $20,000 towards his dream of zooming into space to see if the Earth is flat or round.
I liked this quote:
“I don’t believe in science,” said Hughes, whose main sponsor for the rocket is Research Flat Earth. “I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”

He is getting his 15 minutes of fame.
He's angling for a TV special, book deal etc. not to mention how many people he might get to pay into a go-fund-me.
The funny thing is that the flat earth folks are in 3rd place in this forum for craziest groups.
If you want to see some first rate bizarre mental processes and cognitive dissonance just go start a thread about Trump or Obama.
