In Thailand... Being gay is a death sentence once in prison/jail
bull****, Thai society is one of the most tolerant of sexual diversity, its Buddhist culture does not approach homosexual behavior as evil or sinful, all prejudices are forged in the social ignorance of a poor country. and not in cultural institutionalization as in Christian societies.
before the coup ... the parliament was ready to discuss the legality of gay marriage, there are thousands of lgbts in thai media, thailand girls are addicted to kpop and bl / yaio serials with male homosexual relationships.
Unless this is a misguided swipe at Buddhism (Thailand's predominant religion) for a perceived lack of acceptance of same sex marriage (Buddhists aren't opposed, see link below), a hetero couple doing the exact same thing would ALSO be arrested.
So... Where's the problem other than a typical US tourists' lack of respect for the local culture?
The moral of the story is, respect other peoples culture and if you go out to offend them then don't be surprised if you have to face the consequences. I have no sympathy for these people whatsoever.
I have to wonder why the OP felt the need to mention that they were a gay couple. They were charged with public nakedness, not for being gay.
"He explained the two were brought to Bangkok Yai police station to be charged with public nakedness, an offence liable for a fine of up to 5,000 baht ($153; £115)."

I agree, being gay has nothing to do with them for being arrested.
I guess your experiences in Thailand are a lot different than mine.
Mine as well.
Looks like they are getting a fine, and banned from the country. The fine is minor. The ban...ouch. How many people are banned from a entire country? LOL.
They are lucky, they could have gotten far worse I suspect. And they would have earned it. This was dumb.
Also if you're traveling to Thialand, do not make jokes about or critisise their monarchy or royal family. they still jail people for that.
