It was for $1,877, and it's emblematic of our health care spending mess.

"Overuse" may seem like a benign word, and that's kind of the problem. In its latest piece on health care waste, ProPublica defines overuse as an umbrella term for a type of waste that includes things like unnecessary tests or surgeries.

Having a Dr pierce your ears is like having Neil deGrasse Tyson teach 1st grade science.

Aside from the stupidity of using a surgeon, this is why you almost need health insurance.. the insurer negotiates many of these rates down by 2/3 so the amount they actually get would be something like $600 on a procedure they bill someone without insurance for $1800 for.

Why don't they just charge what it will cost so people without insurance can afford things? Only people without any net worth would be dumb enough to go to an ER without insurance. In any case she could probably haggle this down to $600 herself.

I support UHC but I understand that things like this absolutely must be addressed for it to work. It's little more than another welfare program created to pad bank accounts.

There are many reasons for it beyond that also and it's something we must but refuse to address.
