I used to live in Alabama. The photos in the article are completely dishonest. They obviously went looking for the worst possible area and shot pics there. But it's a dishonest portrayal. The vast majority of Alabama, even in the smallest rural towns, simply does not look like that.
Here is a Forbes article that shows that the poor in the US live better than the vast majority of people elsewhere in the world:

The Democrats and the Republicans essentially switched platforms and base sometime during the Civil Rights. Democrats used to rule the South, now the Republicans do. Republicans used to be the party of Lincoln and anti-slavery, now the Democrats are for that.
Democrats now stood for equality, freedom, smart ideas, and forward-thing. What Republicans used to be a long time ago. If Lincoln is alive today, he'd be a Democrat.
Today, the Repubicans are the party who picked Trump.

This isn't anything new. I read years ago how when Nehru visited the US he said that Mississippi was poorer than Punjab (which is saying a lot considering how India was in the 1950s)
That said an NYU professor who works for the UN will convince nobody in Alabama no more than an "Independent Baptist" preacher will convince anyone in NY
and I would love to know what they are basing their opinion on. It certainly isn't fact, not to mention it just happens to be Alabama they decided to choose, not LA, MS, WV or any of the other states that are often on these lists. UN is pretty useless in my opinion, not that my opinion makes a hell of a lot of difference. If it wasn't for PR purposes I wish we would just pull out of the UN>
