"Federal judge on Monday denied the Trump administration’s request to delay an order requiring the military to begin accepting transgender recruits starting Jan. 1, saying the argument for more time seemed based on “vague claims.â€
“The Court is not persuaded that Defendants will be irreparably injured by†meeting the New Year’s Day deadline, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly wrote."
Because civil right groups make it a civil rights issue. It is not.
People with pre-existing medical conditions are not allowed to join the military. Is that discrimination?
The whole "discrimination" argument is invalid.
You would be incorrect. I served 21 years in the military, in a combat arms MOS and we had soldiers with pre-existing medical conditions. As long as they could fulfill their mission, they were allowed to stay. Once a certain threshold was met, then they were either reclassified or medically discharged.
As a side note, a lot of civilians, that never served a day in the military, have an awful lot of misconceptions about what military members think. They would be wrong 90 percent of the time.
And to the other posters that commented on military medical care, I would rather have a medic, PA or Doctor that has spent years dealing with trauma injuries on the battlefield take care of me any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
I have no problem with transgenders serving. I do have a problem with the military providing gender reassignment surgery.
I understand the "compromise" argument, but I don't think it is going to work.
There also is discussion of a “compromise” that would allow transgender persons currently in the military to continue to serve but not cover the medical costs for transitions or post-transition sustainment. Nor would new transgender members be allowed to enter the service. This will not work.
The keywords here are "serve openly" Once they are allowed to openly service in the military, then they are military's responsibility. Period.
Basically, You're enlisting individuals with a pre-existing medical/mental condition that requires lifelong medical and mental health support. Once they sign on the dotted line, you're assuming the costs of that burden for the rest of their life.
Now, this part of my post is not directed at any particular posters in this thread. The bold is the bottom line for me, Their mental stability is a serious open question. If they have surgery, you're assuming that cost, in dollars and in lost time. They'll be non-deployable for long periods as a result of various surgeries. Any unit, that is carrying deadweight that is non-deployable requires someone else to assume these individuals duties and responsibilities while deployed. And yes, that does have a direct impact on unit morale and readiness. And no, dealing with these issues isn't decided at the unit level...these decisions are being top down driven. Whether those impacted like it or not. Comparing the burdens of carrying transsexuals on the books to that of individuals who get sick or injured while on active duty, is insulting.
Currently, the US Army alone is carrying many troops who are non-deployable. Purposefully adding to that number, is insanity.
Most of my friends have done at least 3 tours, at least. Adding numbers (especially the non-deployables) is not the solution. Military should be LEAN and MEAN, it should always stay this way.
