I went to a rural school, 1st through 6th in same school. If an older kid tried to bully a younger one, he got thumped.

Growing up in the late 50s- I graduated in 1962- there was a notorious bully in my class who bullied everyone and got away with it. He was always a big kid, and got to be a good fighter. By high school, he was pretty much an isolated outcast, so the bullying tapered off with our class, but he would go up and down the valley to pick fights in other towns.

He joined the Air Force after graduation, and finally met his match there. A guy half his size really busted him up and put him in the hospital, according to the rumors, but once he came back, he never bullied anyone again. He's still a jerk, though.
Usually getting their A44es handed to them fixes it, or karma. One of our biggest bullies got taken out in a car crash. Not sure if anyone besides his parents miss him.

I do think we have become a more bullish society. People are tired of 'political correctness' which includes for many, any tact, diplomacy, manners.

So kids are bullied more. Adults are meaner -- it makes sense kids would be meaner.

It's hard to compare the past to now.

I remember the teachers encouraging kids to stand up for themselves. Also, tattletales got the same punishment as offenders but I’m sure millennials in public schools were rewarded for informing on their fellow students.

Yup.

It was pretty much the only option other than to tolerate being bullied.

But we all survived and nobody shot up the school.

Imagine that........

People don't shoot up a school for being bullied.

Nothing was done. Kids were teased a lot. I remember one kid who used to carry a briefcase in high school. He was really picked on a lot. I wasn't friends with him but I can remember when a bunch of bullies took his briefcase and threw it into the girls' room.

He was yelling at them but they just laughed. I went into the girls' room, retrieved his briefcase for him, gave those bullies a dirty look, and just went on home. So no one was protected but some of us stood up and helped the victim.

Probably kids today need to be taught to fight back, at least SAY something back and don't just sit and take it.

Some kids can’t do that. Not everyone is capable of fighting, especially someone bigger than they are.
