Trump Sets PrivatePrisons Free
By James Surowiecki
In August, the JusticeDepartment said that private federal prisons were less safe and less securethan government-run ones. The same month, the department announced that itwould phase out the use of private prisons at the federal level. Although mostof the private-prison industry operates on the state level (immigrant-detentioncenters are its other big business), the news sent C.C.A.’s stock down bythirty-five per cent. Donald Trump’s victory changed all that: withindays, C.C.A.’s stock had jumped forty-seven per cent...
Imprisoning people isone of the weightiest things that government does, yet outsourcing imprisonmentmeans that treatment of inmates is shaped by bottom-line considerations. Thishas led to understaffing, inadequate mental-health care, and, in some cases, inadequate meals. Worse, private prisons have an obvious incentive to keep people inside as long as possible.
To get over the problem, people need to get over being wrong and stupid enough to vote for candidates who take campaign money from private prison companies. In turn, private prisons expect the state to make deals guaranteeing taxpayers pay for empty cells. What a bad deal that could turn out to be.
The issue is not so much them profiting from cruelty and misery.
The much more important fact is they are influencing laws that are created and enforced, all to benefit them. This is very apparent with the drug war, take away drug crime and drug related crime, what would they be left with? Would it be enough to even support such a large industry in the first place?
'Wag the dog' was such a good movie, the same basic tactic employed with prisons...create laws that a large percentage of people will consistently break, meaning there will be a huge need for prisons to house them, a huge need for law enforcement, etc

All of that is as American as apple pie.
America is a business, not a country.
If you want civilization, move to Europe, Japan, Australia, or Canada.
