Or the Belschnickel (the anti-Santa). In my grandmother's day, a neighbor would dress up in rags and black face and go from house to house, farm to farm with candy and switches. He'd throw candy on the floor and hit the kids with a switch when they'd grab for the candy. To the uproarious merriment of their parents. This would be rural Pennsylvania in the early 1900's.
There's a carved wood statue of a "Belschnickel" my daughter puts on her fireplace mantel over Christmas. No blackface or rags, he's dressed as Saint Nicholas, in a robe with a hood, with a sack of switches.
The Belschnickel would hit bad children with a switch, but the Krampus would drown and/or eat them.
