Any retailer that has a store without cashiers will also have a store without products to sell. Neither concept will be successful. Creating opportunities for theft will increase expenses.

Same in Oregon. But the other 48 are primarily self service. I really have not seen a gas station that even offers the option of full service for a long time. Maybe in some small towns. The federally owned gas stations of Mexico are full service. But paying them about $1 an hour that works there.

I would not shop there. I refuse to use self check out. I am not working for Wal-Mart for free.

Agreed.

Agree "this does feel different this time around". Mainly because the tax cuts incentivize 'uncreating' jobs & sending jobs overseas whenever possible, while also seeking to weaken safety nets in order to pay for the tax cuts. While also ignoring that 99% of US need jobs to provide for ourselves & our families.

Seems more self-destructing this time around.

At this point you are correct. The technology is being developed and tested in many areas but not implemented all that much yet. But the areas likely to get hit first for example driving jobs. Taxi's, delivery and long distance truckers could get impacted very quickly. At least 3 million jobs there. Food service and retail is another 30 million jobs. These are mostly unskilled jobs much of which could be replaced by automation. Not that all those jobs will be lost by if 30% are that is a lot of unskilled unemployed people.

When exactly that tipping point happens is anyone's guess. I think the change over the years from family run retail and food service businesses to national chains even if some are franchises will make it much easier to automate. Hard for a mom and pop business to pay for automation but much easier for Walmart or McDonalds to do so.

With or without tax cuts it will happen. Tax cuts don't send jobs overseas high taxes do.

Actually if the tax cuts increase growth it will push up wages just like we saw yesterday with banks and AT&T giving back to their employees. Fedex has pledged billions in new investment and perhaps companies like Burger King will come back here. They save a billion a year being based in Canada with their lower corporate tax rates. Canada is one place not happy with the tax cuts. They have benefited for years by attracting American companies.

Agree the automation & jobs being sent overseas has already been steadily happening for 3 or 4 decades.

As for tax cuts increasing wages? I'll believe it when I see it, past 'performances' of 'tax holidays' & tax cuts without closing loopholes do not indicate this will be the case this time around.

Well we have to realize there will be jobs for those who work on the computers and those who make sure the self check outs are working correctly. Add to this, baby boomers are quickly reaching retirement age and families are have fewer kids at later ages. This means fewer people in the work force. Right now, our huge Walmart only has about 1/2 dozen checkers. Everything else is self checkout.

It makes sense if a corporation has more money at their disposal and the economy is near full employment it gives that corporation the leverage to increase wages as shown yesterday. If you have ever run a business you would know keeping jobs filled is critical and pays off in the long run.

How does keeping that money in the hands of the federal government increase wages?
