When Donald Trump’s campaign was accused of spreading “fake news,” he quickly appropriated the term for himself. The true purveyors of fake news, he claimed, were television networks like CNN and newspapers like this one.

Now, as Mr. Trump and his allies seem on the verge of staging a coup against independent institutions and the rule of law — maligning the special counsel Robert Mueller and threatening a purge at the F.B.I. — the president’s supporters are appropriating yet another word for themselves. Mr. Mueller’s investigation aims to “destroy” the Trump presidency “for partisan political purposes and to disenfranchise millions of American voters,” the Fox News host Jesse Watters claimed on Saturday. “We have a coup on our hands in America.”

This marks a new era in American politics. The Republican Party is no longer just obfuscating the truth or defending the president when he is accused of wrongdoing. Rather, Mr. Trump, Fox News and Republicans in Congress seem to be actively using falsehoods to prepare an assault on the institutions that allow American democracy to function.
From a NYT's Op-ed:

Trump has shown little or no respect for the truth or the rule of law. As a matter of fact he has shown disdain for the norms of the presidency.

You act like this never happened before: In one of the installments of Ken Burns Vietnam they play a taped conversation of Lyndon Johnson complaining about fake news to the Washington Post

LBJ did not have an entire news network fabricating crap about him. Nice try.

FBI got caught lying and worse, showing unprofessional behavior and possibly violating the law... so the liberals think this is all okay and try to defend by saying it’s about “democracy”.. liberals truly are dumber than a rock...

They see their hopes of a Trump impeachment slipping away, and they are lashing out.

The only people disregarding the rule of law are those wanting to impeach Trump because he spoke of grabbing women... or because his hair is orange... or because he drinks to many diet cokes... or because they believe in unproven claims of collusion.

This is Trump's way of life -- not just concerning the presidency. He is nothing but a parasite living off his host. He delights in pushing the envelope and crossing legal and moral boundaries. People with immense wealth have always tried to influence politics and government policy and to bend rules for their own benefit. They typically do it from a distance. Trump is different because his huge ego and narcissism forces him to be the man in the spotlight -- for good or bad. If Trump had backed one of the other GOP candidates he could have called the shots and manipulated policy in the background and there would be less outright hatred of the man. Instead, the mental and emotional defect of his narcissism, his instability, and lack of any kind of moral compass pushed him to the front and makes him a pariah once he succumbed to his real nature.
