This isnt about traitors, this is about history...
Indeed. It's about the neo-Confederates rewriting history to make it appear as if people like Nathan Bedford Forrest were honorable men fighting for a noble cause.
Well, just because it's embarrassing doesn't mean it isn't a lie. I know the education I got wasn't enough. I learned more about the Civil War (and the Confederate cause) on my own than from my high school teachers in the early 2000s. What I know about comes from what I've looked up myself and read. This is why I find the Confederate cause to be a deplorable, ugly cause. I didn't pull this out of my posterior. I looked this stuff up.
I was actually quoting the misuse of there in place of their. Thats embarrassing to a poster trying to call out education problems.
there are a lot of things that made sense at the time and in a different generation/time were ok but putting todays standards and applying that will create a lot of issues. Can you imagine a speed limit of 60 MPH being put on a horse carriage.
some of the stories from my parents/grand parents/uncles/etc are kinda nuts. When I heard them Im like how'd did everyone think this type of thing was ok? different generation it was the norm, trying to keep fighting a war that doesn't exist now doesn't help anyone today...just leave this history where it belongs, in the past.

Leaving things in the past is one thing, denying reality is another. Why deny the historical realities? How is that helpful? & why celebrate the worst parts of our history by glorifying? Nonsensical. It's only possible to celebrate the worst parts of our hisory by the revision of historical realities.
Like the failure to remove a splinter will sometimes create infection & so prevent proper healing.
Not to mention, the idea that one could own people as property never made sense, not then not now, never made one bit of sense.
Also not to mention, the American Civil Rights movement is not ancient history.

I prefer to think of the statues as caution tape at a crime scene.
People use to think putting up statues to these guys was a good idea. That's the first thing to realize that's crazy.
People use to think putting up statues at all was a good idea. That's the next step in this cognitive trip.
Because he was one of the greatest tactical geniuses in US military history. IIRC, Forrest enlisted and worked his way up to general. He supposedly was a tough old SOB and get shot and injured numerous times.
Also, his views on race moderated significantly as he grew older.
I mean considering he conquered so much of Europe, you can consider Hitler a tactical military genius. I am sure his views on Jews changed too, at some point on April 30th, 1945.

You make a good point.
