The Miss America Pageant (MAP) - Should it stay or go? Keep it or Kill it?
Article today in the NY Times about a pageant official's controversial remarks describing contestants in the most vulgar of terms. Since many people here can't access the NY Times, here's the key excerpt from the story: "...Sam Haskell, the chief executive of the Miss America Organization, wrote an email laughing along as Lewis Friedman, the televised pageant’s head writer, referred to former crown-holders in the crudest, most derogatory, term for a woman’s anatomy. In this correspondence, the former Miss Americas are not winners. Not women. They’re not even people; not even bodies. Just body parts. Then it got worse."
Huffington Post is now reporting that Josh Randle, president and COO of the Miss America Organization, has submitted his resignation due to his crude remarks. This doofus bears a strong resemblance to a certain other doofus who shall go un-named....
Note: Huff Post articles contain the crude language that the NY Times won't publish.
Seems the "me-too" train keeps gathering men as it rolls merrily down the tracks....
So, with that as background, what do you think? Should the MAP stay or should it be discontinued?
I prefer the MAP, and all beauty pageants, to just go away, IMO they simply re-inforce old stereotypes about women as property, sex objects, gold diggers, etc. I especially clips of little girls of grade school age strut about in pageants, good grief, it's a sickness that parents do this to their child.

It really doesn't hurt anybody, OTOH it has sunk really beneath the radar of American culture. While there are a fair number of female celebrities who were Miss USA or who competed for Miss USA, few Miss Americas have gone on to anything that keeps them in the public eye. I doubt too many Americans could name a Miss America more recent than Vanessa Williams (the last Miss America who went on to show biz fame). Miss USA has completely eclipsed it.
So I'm in between on this, really. If the pageant completely disappeared, not many would notice. That said if someone still wants to continue the pageant and is willing to continue to pay for it, let them continue it.
I haven't liked the pageant since long before the current kerfuffle.
It's not about brains, talent or character, it's about how a woman looks when she's dressed in as little clothing as possible. Kinda like the values of a strip club.
That said, while I'd be glad if it were gone, if it's going to exist, the staff should have the decency to respect the women who are the ultimate source of their paychecks. Which I imagine are fairly hefty.
What a bunch of sleazy creeps, they - the staff - should be mopping bathroom floors on their hands and knees.
