I wouldn't be ready for that; it would be too much for me to handle. ( But then, again, it may be just me, and I am not a man.)
When it comes to pit bulls however -... I'd have a problem adopting ANY big dog from rescue shelter ( just because I don't know what it has been put through, what other people did to it/how it has been raised - with other words yet again that very "predictability factor.")
For example the friends that I spent this Christmas with, adopted recently a rescue dog, after their old one died. I could already see how much that dog has been damaged, ( which brings yet again this "unpredictability factor," - the way he reacts to people,) and how much *guessing* it takes, to figure out what calms him down or brings aggression in him. The fact that it was a pit bull mix most likely, didn't help a bit, but purebred pit bull from shelter?
No way, as far as I am concerned. I would avoid staying in the same room with such dog, while I was still willing to work with that friend's one, when they were not sure how to introduce him to the room full of strangers.

Take note - such *serious* breeds as Dobbies, Rottweilers and ditto- German shepherds are well.. German.
Yet obviously Germans see the difference between these breeds AND Pitbulls.
The reason I bet is this very "predictability" factor, that makes pitbulls the loose cannons, defying the "established patterns," known to dog owners and breeders alike.
Good points. I am even leery of pit mixes. As far as your friend's dog goes, if it's fearful it can have issues that are hard if not impossible to break. Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer has stated many times that it is easier to train a "red zone" aggressive dog than a fearful one. Btw, I am a female myself and just wanted to note with multiple dogs, which you are correct, will adopt pack mentality, if you can train the Alpha the rest will fall in line as a rule.

Your statement I bolded; I think you nailed it with that. The most shocking thing about the statistics and comments in this thread is the fact that Pit Bulls can attack their owners. Even aggressive dogs don't do this. I owned one that I couldn't let out of my sight for this reason but he would NEVER bite me.

I have been around abused dogs, even starved dogs and they just don't turn on their owners and maul them. This is a Pit Bull thing. There is a reason phrases like "Man's Best Friend" and "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" are so well known. Turning on the owner that raised it is beyond disturbing and can't be excused. As other posters have said, it's almost like they have to be treated as a non domesticated animal.

Pit bull retards can't be reasoned with.

There is something wrong with them that makes them want these dogs.

All I can say is, I was involved in dog rescue for years but draw the line with Pit Bulls. People can say whatever, but as I just posted I can't trust a dog that can turn on it's owner. That should be every sane person's line in the sand, so to speak.

Can someone please link me to an article with how many people are killed annually by Golden Retrievers or other breeds? I'm curious about the comparison.

The weight of a dog sitting on an infant could induce or accelerate a SIDS death. 36. Bethany Lynn Stephens, 22, a pit bull advocate, was on December 14, 2017 killed by her own two pit bulls while walking them in a wooded area near her home in Goochland, Virginia.
I find it hard to have any sympathy for attacks on owners.

No kidding. I wonder what the level of outrage would be if someone started a thread about deaths caused by people who text while driving. It's a lot more of a danger to most people.

we currently have three rescue dogs, have had nine rescue dogs during our life, and fostered dozens of animals. both of us currently volunteer and have volunteered in animal shelters for decades. we've known some wonderful 'pit bulls' at the shelter; however, breeding for aggression, dog fighting, and animal abuse by unscrupulous owners are overrepresented for these 'pit bull' breeds. for these reasons, I would never trust one of these dogs in my home no matter how nice and sweet the dog appears. Just my opinion.

This whole thread seems like a debate/issue in search of a problem. The stats are so out there, I cannot believe it is a topic.

But then again, there is another thread with someone wanting to ban cords for window blinds, because like 13 kids have been killed since 1987 or some ridiculous number like that; it is not even worth discussing and making an issue out of it the numbers are so small.

But you know what is one crazy thing about a lot (not all, a lot) of dog attacks? They are by unneutered males, and the owners have a history of animal abuse.

Bull, the vast majority come from backyard breeders looking to make a quick buck. Fighting rings are rare and they're practically nonexistent in the western half of the U.S.

Your vet is full of it, (misinformation). Several breeds may be more likely to bite, chihuahuas being one, but the only breeds that are more dangerous and deadly are the larger pit bull-like mastiff-type breeds. Most doge bite, then release. Pit bulls do much worse. They hang on, shake their heads, then change their grip and do the same. They're known for degloving their victims.

Yeah, in your dreams. Chihuahuas are big bluffers. They aren't physically capable of taking anybody's face off and they're fear biters. Pit bulls can be fear biters too, which means they will bite then release, but when they decide to go after someone or something they can be deadly.
