I wasn’t sure where this topic should be posted, but I figured that after some careful consideration, that this thread may well belong here(if it doesn’t please feel free to move it to the forum where it belongs, thank you)
So I was just vaguely curious, but I will make this inquiry as short and straightforward as I can, so my three questions are as follows:
1. Which countries across the globe likely have the best relations with the Americans?
2. Which Countries would you say are the diplomatic middle ground in terms of relations with America?
3. Which countries of the World have the worst relations with America?
I am merely curious and really would like to know which countries are more inclined to be America’s Ally and which Countries don’t have a good relationship with America
I think we have the closest and least complicated relationships with Canada, western Europe, and Australia/New Zealand. We also have close ties with Mexico, Turkey, the Saudis, Japan, and Israel, but there are some major tensions in those relationships. There are probably a few other nations in this close-but-fraught category, but they are not coming readily to mind.
And yes, they are uneasy about Trump, but I think the nations we are closest to are willing to wait him out as they maintain the close trading and cultural relationships we have already established. Much as he might like it to, it doesn't ALL go through Trump.
Canada and the USA have the largest trading relationship in the world.. by far.
We here in Canada sell more goods ( of all kinds ) to US customers, than the next five countries, combined. The US sells more goods TO US, than any other country in the world.
Of the 50 US states, 37 of them report that Canada is their number one export destination. Trade with Canada directly employs fourteen million American workers.
So, the economics are huge, but there is a lot more to the relationship between the USA and Canada. Many of the populations in the two countries are related to people who live in the other country, by marriage or birth. Canadians and Americans attend Universities in each other's countries. American Doctors do specialisation courses at Canadian medical schools, and Canadians attend US medical schools.
The Canadian Forces work hand in hand with US military forces, and at NORAD the second in command General is a RCAF officer. Individual CF members do 2 year cross training programs with US units... and US armed forces members do exchange tours with the CF. We are the only country that the US military trusts enough to allow us to use the most secure and secret equipment in action situations.
Canada and the US have cross border enforcement teams that 50/50 made up of RCMP officers and CBP and ICE officers. These teams work on both sides of the northern border.
The US Immigration service has inspectors who work at Canadian airports, doing pre flight inspections of passengers who intend to fly to the US. Before they get on a aircraft, the ICE agents interview them. check their documents and approve or deny their right to fly into the USA. The ICE agents and their families LIVE in Canada, and their assignment is for 2 years. Their kids go to a Canadian school and the family lives in a Canadian suburb.
Canadians read US news, watch US TV shows and study US history in school. Most Canadian cable TV services carry dozens if not hundreds of US channels. My service here in Toronto has 900 channels to choose from.
So, yes , we are the country next door that Americans tend to take for granted. On 911 all US airspace was shut down on that terrible day in September, 237 flights were diverted to airports across Canada. They were welcomed, fed, housed in people's homes, given toiletries, entertained and treated like family....for five days. About 13,000 people came for dinner and stayed for all most a week.
America's closest allies and friends today are, IMHO: Japan, Poland, Israel, South Korea, Britain, Australia, Philippines, and still, probably Canada. Mexico too, although things have been strained due to uncontrollable illegal immigration.
Middle: Too many to mention. With the way things have been going with China in the past few years, I would probably suggest China. With the way Merkle has been turning her post into a dictatorship, the relationship with Germany could become strained. I do recall her telling Germans and other European countries that it's time to find new friends, after Trump was elected. So be it.
Our corporations do a great deal of business in Mexico, often at the expense of US jobs/workers.
We would be fine without Mexico. Mexico might do OK if most of their people went back to farming, but they would likely be even poorer than they are today.
Israel is number one because it gets to tell us what to do.
Britain is number two because, as much as it complains about us at times, it does what we want it to do.
Same for Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Germany is basically still under U.S. military occupation. Same with Austria and Japan. So they don't do anything that we don't approve of.
We protect a lot of other European countries. Our nuclear arsenal prevents Russia from taking them over.
We protect South Korea as well.
Russia would be friendly with us, but right now Congress wants to hate Russia as a way of bashing Trump.
Our relations with China are so-so.
Our relations with North Korea are bad.
Our relations are probably the worst with Mexico.
