The Trump of 1980 is a more reasonable and perspicacious man, than the Trump of 2017. The Trump of 1980 actually wields a somewhat voluminous vocabulary, and is able to speak extemporaneously without repeating the same bombastic catch-phrases.

Also, in 1980 there really was something to worry about American primacy. The stock market had been moribund for a decade, and had two more troublesome years to go. Inflation was (by today's standards) rampant. American military power was still reeling from the embarrassment of Vietnam. Operation Eagle Claw had just failed (or, depending on when the interview was taped, was about to fail). The 1980-Trump was correct to point out the debacle of the Iran hostage crisis, and the lack of credible military response (that was pun-intended, BTW).

The America of 2017 is much stronger and more prosperous than the America of 1980. The Trump of 2017, on the other hand, is much inferior to the Trump of 1980.

President Trump is the opposite of a sheep.
There are no other world leaders with this quality.
The opposite of a sheep is, in general parlance, a wolf. Do we wish for a political leader who resembles a wolf?
