In the old link Trump is speaking in Cleveland. Cleveland did exactly what Trump is calling for. What happened was that the charter schools ended up corrupt also.
The problem just like in everything is the refusal to hold people responsible.
That is a common theme that the last administration championed. Criminal wrong doing was fined and the criminals were free to go about their corruption.
Will that continue as the transition to a new administration is made ?
We will see. Its early yet. Less than a year.

It's early but so far we haven't seen much of it.
Obama completely failed in holding people responsible for their failures. You will get no argument from me there.
There aren't many societal problems which could be largely solved by a single action -- but this step is an obvious exception to the rule: public employee unionism needs to be reformed, and its power drastically curbed, if not outlawed entirely .
The biggest issue with that is that those unions can participate in the political process, supporting, endorsing advertising for and donating to political candidates. In many cases PEUs are the largest donors to politicians. They buy the politicians, the pols reward them with unsustainable wages and benefits-all to be paid by the taxpayer. NO ONE REPRESENTS THE ACTUAL TAXPAYERS.

It is a HUGE conflict of interest, and how it is legal is beyond me. If you want to know why we spend the largest $$$ per student yet do NOT get the results other countries get, just look at the public sector teacher's unions. It is why your real estate, and property taxes have gone up way beyond inflation over the years. Many are paying tens of thousands of dollars in taxes just for the "privilege" of owning a home. Thanks unions!

You have the right to choose which school you go to in other countries where many schools are no longer under local authority funding. The schools receive direct funding from private means, such as entrepreneurs or NGOs as well as direct funds from Government and are free to run theior own budgets and compete for pupils.
This is the state school system in England, where most schools will be academies by 2022, with latest figures revealing 71 per cent of state-funded secondary schools are now academies.
I'm not sure that as it currently stands, that this is the best example to go by.
According to PISA rankings, Great Britain only scores a few places higher than the U.S in the amalyzed areas of Math, Reading and Science. They have actually fallen in rank since 2000, when PISA started it's current ranking system.
So, it is safe to say that privatization has had no positive academic affect on schools in the U.K, at least based on data collected by PISA.

I personally don't believe that it is the teachers or the unions that are to blame. Have you seen how much Superintendants get paid, even in poor districts? It's crazy.
Also, the misuse of funds seems rife within some districts. A school district near my own was recently embroiled in scandal after making severe cut backs to music and P.E programs, while spending thousands per week on 'catering costs' for board members.
ETA: I'm a huge advocate for overhauling the public school systems in the U.S... but I am not yet convinced that privatization is the solution.
Some of the best school systems have close to no choice at all like Finland.
Correct. I read an article some time ago, that over there, graduates from teacher college don't even get a choice about which district they go to - they're assigned by the education department.
