What a strange question? Why would being responsible in our spending habits be unpatriotic? I'm seriously boggled.
^^
this!
There was a report some months ago that said for every $1 earned people spend something like 2.50 dollars more. So, now people aren't spending over what they earn, buying what they need not spending outside their means. Being irresponsible is what got us here today. Being responsible and promoting a healthy economy is the most responsible thing anyone could do and advocate for.
Considering the number of Americans using their credit cards for everything they buy, and who are unable to pay them off, I'd say not spending is good advice to them. Debt and credit and people spending too much are what caused these problems now. The only thing that will get us out of this is for people and the government to get out of debt.

I am glad you liked my question! My point is that while I can understand why people are cutting back on their spending, I am to, but the media has a lot of impact on telling the public what they should do. In the past the media said buy buy buy and our economy boomed. Now they tell us we should stay home and not spend a dime more than necessary. This will make the economy worse, and prolong the recession.

Only in the short term. In the long run, if people are wise at spending we wouldn't get into this mess which has been caused by unrealistically inflated real estate prices, too much reliance on credit, debt, etc. People are going to have to learn the same hard lessons our ancestors learned going from the 1920's to the 1930's. After WWI in this country people went crazy buying stuff, investing in stock, using credit, etc., then it hit them like the hammer it was in 1929. People who don't learn from history really make big mistakes...
At the local mall yesterday I saw lots of people with shopping bags in hand. It was a gorgeous day (a little chilly) in central OH. Spring is around the corner and people seem to have a different attitude this time of year.
You think the economy is moving because of spending? Wrong... it is moving by increasing the debt burden everyone pays into, the more debt, the more the economy is in full swing.. Saving puts a crimp in the economy, there comes a point when you can't load yourself with debt anymore so the they try to give you more money so that you can get more debt (the economic stimulus plan)... if you like to be owned by your debts then don't save. Saving puts you ahead of the game. Eventually, they will start to rob from those who save (middle class and wealthier people) so that they would go into debt and give it to the poor so that they can increase their debts. Unpatriotic, considering the country is out to put you in debt? I think we have a role reversal here... I think the government is unpatriotic when it puts money before people...

Well, I know that I personally have been helping the economy lately - been doing a lot of purchasing for the new summer home - lots of furniture and stuff. Getting the new car soon. Etc.

Exactly. We've got to quit being so credit-reliant in the U.S. In the long run it hurts us all. If it takes a recession to wake us up, so be it. Short term pain for long term gain is a fair trade off, imo.

I'm doing what I can!
But if you don't put yourself in greater debt and pay interest on that, it won't help the economy. An economy based on that (thanks to our government) deserves to fail because people are made to suffer with debt for the those without debt to profit from. I rather base an economy on talent, skill, and responsiblity, its a shame we have moved from that into a debt-based economy, where nobody is responsible and entitlements are given to silence the sheep...
Its noit a bad thing to spend if you have the cash. But much of the spending is on credit. Bad for the individUAL and the economy. after all the housing crisis is one of credit that people accumulated and can't pay back.
