31 Republicans have announced they will not seek re-election. In addition there will be three Special Elections in seats formerly held by the GOP prior to Election Day (2 have resigned, another is by the end of the month).
Granted some are from ultra safe districts, but it is still a large number and will likely continue to grow considering it is only mid-January.
I believe there are 334 Representative positions (currently 240 R, 194 D), all up for election this year. I'm sure this is a fluid number, but CNN.com reports that there will be 19 representatives retiring at the end of this term (14 Republicans, 5 Democrats), two leaving before the end of the term (both R). There will also be 8 Representatives who will be running for Senate (5 R and 3 D) and 9 Representatives running for Governor (5 R and 4 D.) So all together that means 26 Republicans and 12 Democrats will leave the House. I imagine that could change.
In the Senate, where there are 100 seats total, but only will be 33 seats up for election, the Democrats will be defending 25, while the Republicans will be defending only 8. There are 3 Senators retiring, all Republicans.
I can't help but wonder when any member of Congress leaves if they might feel they are sitting on a ticking time bomb of secrets that are about to explode - both parties have been guilty and I suspect they have not all been outed.
This is interesting. It is a break down who is and is not running, retiring, running for other office etc. https://ballotpedia.org/List_of_U.S....ection_in_2018
43 Representatives (14 Democratic, 29 Republican) are not seeking re-election to their US House districts.

Crossed my mind too. The swamp draining itself?
