I actually know a family from Norway. Both husband and wife work for the NAVY and they both help out in the local VA hospital. (volunteer works) They have a very cute 3 year old son.
They speak very good English and I learned Norwegians begin their English studies around Grades 2-7.
Anyone who undertakes the monumentally difficult task of relocating around the world with no promise of success is the sort of go getter that we should embrace. That they saved up enough money to do so while living in a "****hole" is even more impressive.
In lieu of Norwegian successful professionals wishing to emigrate here, which there seems to be a shortage of, we do ourselves a favor by welcoming hard working people to grow our economy no matter where they're from.

If a winner is someone with a bull-in-the-china-shop demeanor, blusters and brags a lot, and bullies those in vulnerable positions -- nah, we don't need'em. In fact, the world would be better off if they are in jobs and professions requiring minimal human contact. We certainly don't need those types in positions of power (governmental, business, media, academia, or even the Smithville Rotary Club).
The WINNERS don't want to come. Why should they? People move for opportunities, which is on its face an indication that they see room for improvement. If someone is at the peak of their game living in Norway, why on earth would he want to chuck it all to come to America? It doesn't make sense.
We should send our tired and poor to the s—thole countries.
...because they aren’t s—thole countries, right liberals?
No liberal, me included, would say they aren't. We might use kinder words but the economics are fact and us libs like facts and reality and all the stuff that makes you righties uncomfortable.
That doesn't make the people from them ****ty, however. That's the distinction that you conservatives don't get.
Why is Europe better? It was undeniably a ****hole back then.
We entered the post-industrial era.
Europe in the big emigration years was caught in the weird conundrum where improvements in hygiene and medicine led to reduced infant mortality and that caused a population shift, a boom in young people. Problem is, there was nowhere for these additional working-class young Europeans to go. (Nowhere attractive, anyway.) If you farmed, you were either the oldest son (who'd get the farm) or you'd spend your life farming for someone else. If you didn't much cherish that perspective, you could get a factory job, Industrialism was rockin' and rollin', boom times. It was just that unbridled capitalism absolutely consumed workers - the cities were unhealthy, working conditions dangerous. The trades were dominated by guilds who couldn't absorb added influx, either. And finally, if you were a man, there was also a fair chance you'd get drafted and sent off to fight a war somewhere, and the best you could hope for in that regard was to get back to the farm in one piece.
So - the idea of a place where you could own your own farmland (or become a skilled tradesman in the farming societies that got established) was extremely attractive for a handful of decades.

This. Of course, some specific ambitions are US only - if you want to design spacecraft or become a Hollywood big name or professional poker player (I guess), you sorta have to make the leap. And there are those who travel out with the goal of marrying money. New York is more of a target-rich environment in that respect.
