What do you mean when you say you are socially liberal and culturally conservative? Often those categories are used interchangeably.
No, not really.
I am all up for multiculturalism, but I think we should control it a bit. That and I believe in traditional ways of thinking.
As far as socially liberal goes, I tolerate gay marriage and think the justice system should work on giving white people and women more serious sentences for instance.
But like I said I am still working on my politics, so expect some naive wording in there.
I fundamentally want the federal government to only do just two things that it's been doing the opposite of, limit immigration to as low as possible and to aim for trade balances and surpluses. I'm not against some social safety nets or unions. Then I want it to get out the way and let the free market decide things. I would repeal most legislation passed after 1960.
But I'm flexible. If the government would end all mass globalized immigration and let native and old stock Americans decide politically things for themselves, I would be pretty accepting of whatever that turns out to be.
I’m conservative in most aspects. On social issues, I think the majority should rule. In other words, gay marriage, abortion, marijuana legalization, etc. should all be decided by popular vote at state level. I would vote conservatively, but would fully accept the will of the majority. I don’t think the government should decide those things. I don’t think the federal government should have any policies recognizing or regulating a person’s marital status, gender, sex, race, religion, etc.
Ficscally: I don’t think this can be decided on by popular vote. You can’t have an entire budget put on the ballot. There has to be long, careful deliberations by legislative and executive bodies. So on these matters I believe the government should be run fiscally responsible, i.e. conservative. A modest surplus should be built into every budget. A deficit should only be allowed during recessions, depressions, wars, national disasters, etc.
Economically, I am a mix. Domestically, I am liberal, i.e. let the free market decide. Internationally, I am conservative, i.e. we should do what is best for America. So, for example, if there are no foreigners making a product, I would support minimal regulation on domestic manufacturers. But if foreigners want to sell the same product here, they should have to abide by all laws imposed on domestic manufacturers.
And concerning regulations, I fully support those that obviously protect workers’ and consumers’ health.
I also support tariffs on imported goods, which at the time is neither liberal or conservative (used to be conservative). At least half of all goods of a certain category should be made in the US. If 99% of televisions are imported, we impose a high tariff on them until domestic manufacturers are making more than 50% of them, then lower the tariff.
As a general rule, government is the problem. That is how I describe my political, social, economic or whatever views.
