Why is he so afraid of the press? In my lifetime a President has never done this before. Has he ever given a reason for not doing this?

2. The press is opposing him on every level and trying to get him out of office.

Because he is a terrible off the cuff speaker and he is not as skilled as someone like Huckabee Sanders in the art of lying to people. Why do a press conference if half of what you say is going to be jibberish and the rest lies and misrepresentations?
Trump is not a very intelligent person, but he is smart enough to know that the more he speaks the more it becomes obvious to everyone else that he is a complete idiot in way over his head. He only cares about communicating with his cult anyway - which can easily be done with Twitter or by proxy via Fox News or white nationalist websites.

Though I disagree that he is not skilled at lying. He's had plenty of practice and a lot of people believe his lies.
