Let's see. Who determines where trains go on those tracks? CSX or Amtrak.

Hint: It's not Amtrak.

(and of course I'm not ruling out the possibility of criminal and/or terrorist reasons, but that wasn't the original point made either.)

When PTC comes, this will be drastically reduced. Unless the GOP loosens regulations on this, risking further lives...

NSTB has said the switch was thrown manually and then padlocked lined up for the siding.

I would put the blame on the controllers (non Amtrak) who routed the train.
All the more reason to end AMTRAK since it cannot ensure safety from the host RR.
And face it the RR's dont want AMTRAK on their rails to begin with, they are in the business of hauling freight.

PTC is not the total answer. It’s still full of flaws.

So since 18 wheelers sometimes wreck on highways, we should end 18 wheelers?

Agreed.

AMTRAK in it's current incarnation has a lot of issues.

If the USA wants a comprehensive passenger train system like that in other first world countries, then it will have to do invest in the infrastructure to allow for it. In most other countries, the rail lines for passengers are owned by the government in a similar manner to highways in the USA.

Correct. Many times I was ordered into a siding to wait for Amtrak. And I am driving a “Z” train which is containers and is extremely time sensitive.

And more often than not Amtrak is late delaying me. Once a few years ago, the Amtrak engine blew their traction motors and I took a spare SD70MAC and pulled the Empire Builder over much of the Havre subdivision. The Amtrak engine still provided electrical power to the passenger consist since our engines are not set up for passenger operations.

I am pretty sure BNSF stuck it to Amtrak for the use of our motive power.

No we should end AMTRAK,its inefficient, unsafe, unreliable, unpopular and the fedguv has no authority to run passenger trains on private property.
