The Federal Government are now above the US Constitution, when it comes to them finding the truth. They have no oversight what so ever, if they want you to be convicted and jailed.
They will find the crime, no matter what. The Machine is built to do so.
There is no way today, for the people to fight the all powerful Federal government. NONE. The Supreme Court can even tell them NO and they continue, as if saying, "whatcha gonna do".

I blame a lot of the current federal over reach on the latitude the Patriot Act grants to authoritative agencies, particularly LE. I cringed when that act was ratified. It also seems that it is more often used in the war on drugs rather than the war on terror. It's only part of the problem, but a fairly sizable part.
Federal government officials have always illegally obtained evidence. I doubt you cared about that until someone you support is the subject of said investigation/research. Our country has been doing this stuff since the early 20th century.
I also agree that it was increased with the passage of the Patriot Act. That is why the whining on the right, and especially with Trump supporters, is funny to me since you all were gung ho about expanding the reach of the intrusion of privacy into the lives of other Americans you deemed criminals and terrorists. You only have a problem with it when you are investigated for your suspected criminals acts and acts of terrorism. Then you want to yell foul about something you supported being enacted. It is pretty hilarious honestly.
Thing is, this abuse of power goes much farther back. Couple points on that:
The IRS was created to exist outside the 4th and 5th Amendments.
The SEC was created to exist outside the 4th and 5th Amendments.
There's tons more examples, but we'll go with two big ones. These are agencies that function with virtually no oversight and are not just excused for, but TASKED with violating the 4th and 5th Amendments whenever they feel like it.
People think the PATRIOT Act started all this.
We are rolling up on 100 years of our constitutionally protected natural rights meaning zero_nada_nuthin to the federal government, if violating those rights keeps the trains running on time.
I put the blame for all this squarely on the American citizens. The Constitution gives us the right to remove govts from power if need be, its our fault that not enough people will step up and take action.
But apparently the first time it's pissed off the OP.
As it should all Americans.
