We are trained to do that. We would give our lives to protect the kids in our care. Fact. And as you see some teachers died protecting the kids.
And given the option of at least trying to stop an active shooter with a firearm of your own? That's a no brainer for me. A 45 ACP I personally find a preferable option to being a human shield.
I see that the answer is always more guns. Should we arm the kids as well? Janitor? Lunch ladies? Greeter has a 357 Magnum tapped under the desk? Don't stop there's make sure all the afterschool folks have guns to. PTA packing. Girl Scouts 22s. Boy scouts shotguns. Make sure the football basketball kickline and cheerleading coaches have their AK47s strapped on as well. We are really becoming an Idiocracy.

I know you prob think I'm a NY anti gun guy. I'm not. Whatever stereotype you have toss it. I will say that the fantasy of being the hero with the gun is just that...... I have no desire to be Rambo in the classroom. Let's figure out how to KEEP the shooters OUT.
Exactly! I don't know of any place where a teacher makes more than a Police Officer. One thing for sure I'd be pretty upset if I was a 40k a year teacher being told that I had to do double duty as a cop
NY cops can make 250k with some overtime. Fact. No teacher is making that. 120k maybe... . Max
Vetted by LE....umm yea. Quite frankly LE is some of the least qualified to vet anyone in the use of a firearm. Cops that are actually well practiced and very competent in use of a firearm under stress are rarer than you might think. Police training does not call for regular practice UNDER STRESS with a firearm. Yearly AQTs don't count.
I think you misunderstood me, I was not talking about vetting for weapon proficiency, what I was suggesting is that local law enforcement conducts comprehensive background checks for CCW applicants, they can deny an application for any number of things that would not disqualify a person screened only with NICS and in most states they can also require a psych eval as part of the screening. If we extended that kind of scrutiny to people who want to own/possess a semi-auto with high capacity detachable magazines we might be able to screen out folks like Nikolas Cruz.

That's rather deliberately disingenuous. I have stated repeatedly that armed school staff needs to be properly trained and able to work under pressure in such a manner as to be EFFECTIVE. No, that is hardly stating that the lunch lady and students should be armed.
Proper training is readily available and I do believe the NRA and others can and should step up with such PROPER training. Sheesh...AKs. Seriously? Idiocracy indeed. A school doesn't need every swinging d*** to have a gun to have proper protection for Pete's sake. Matter of fact, not knowing who is armed and when is deterance enough. Protected by SW three days a week...you guess which three. It's about making a hard target, NOT an armed forward operating firebase. Just please stop with the theatrics. It's typical of the anti firearms mentality, but it's melodramatic and quite frankly VERY stale.
A lot of people are mentioning that SROs are typically either retired or nearing retirement age. Turns out that Scott Peterson was 54 according to the article linked below. The way everyone was talking I figured mid to late 60s. He'd been an SRO since 2009, when he was 45 or 46. He'd been with the Sheriff's office for more than thirty years. Now, I'm sure he was near retirement now from what I remember being told years ago when I was in TV News and I would be chatting with detectives on a police force here. Some of them would actually retire in their mid-50s and then rehire with the same police force. This guy wasn't a security guard; he was a sheriff's deputy and had been one for more than half of his life.

Most cops are eligible for retirement after 20-25 years. The country is full of retired LEO in their 40s. You don't see many still working in their 60s.

The Sheriff is pizzed. Not hard to reckon why. What with all the cases we've seen where cops shoot unarmed kneeling suspects, women in PJs, kids with toy guns etc, then when the SHTF for real a cop fails to engage an active shooter killing kids. WTF!!?? LE just keeps getting black eyes. Really makes a guy wonder just what's going on with our police these days.
I need to watch the video of Peterson again, but I believe he was carrying an AR himself. Not sure about that so I'll have to take a second look.

Like the 30 year veteran of the Sheriff's Department who stood around outside while all the shooting was going on
