Maybe ppl ought not go around using terms like "statistical significance" when they don't know anything about statistics.
So there are 330 million Americans and something like 600,000,000 guns.

There's less than 200 deaths per year due to school shootings (hard to find an actual number).

That would be 200/330,000,000 or 0.00006% (in other words statistically insignificant).

Or is 0.00006% somehow statistically significant on your planet?

What IS statistically significant is that we have a small minority of Americans committing 52.5% of all homicides in America. That's insane!

No shortage of FBI profilers and independent mental health experts dedicate their careers to the study of mass shooters. While no two shooters are the same, they typically share common personality disturbances of anti- social, narcissistic and sadistic traits and a strong desire for notoriety.

Most have a demonstrated obsession with guns and mass shooters who came before. There is also a strong tendency to idolize the military.

Just compare the highlighted numbers below.

In America, we don't discriminate. We don't punish everyone in a group (gun owners) for the poor behavior of a small minority (criminal gun owners). Just like we don't punish all Muslims for the acts of some radical Muslim terrorists.

Homicide

In 2013, number and percentage of murder arrests by race were:

Black or African Americans 4,379 = 52.2%
White Americans (including Hispanic Americans) 3,799 = 45.3%
American Indians or Alaska Natives 98 = 1.06%
Asian Americans 101 = 1.2%[46][47]

Inversely, the percentage of individuals in each racial demographic arrested for murder in 2013 was:

0.01% of Black or African American population (4,379/38,929,319)
0.0017% of White American and Hispanic American population (3,799/223,553,265)
0.0033% of American Indian or Alaska Native population (98/2,932,248)
0.0007% of Asian American population (101/14,674,252)
0.001% of Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander population (6/540,013).[46][48]
Those stats don't hold up in mass shootings, especially the most spectacular mass shootings.

Yep. Made that point in a prior post.

Nearly one-third of the world’s mass shootings have occurred in the United States, a new study finds. Adam Lankford, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Alabama, has released the first quantitative analysis of public mass shootings around the world between 1966 through 2012. Unsurprisingly, the United States came out on top—essentially in a league of its own.

https://www.cnn.com/2017/10/03/ameri...ics/index.html

On Wednesday, Nikolas Cruz, 19, arrived at the halls of his former school in Parkland, Florida. Armed with a rifle, he allegedly carried out a massacre that left 17 people dead.
In October 2017, 64-year-old gunman Stephen Paddock fired into crowds gathered at the Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas. Fifty-eight people were killed and more than 500 people were injured. It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

In 2016, an attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando left 49 people dead. In 2012, Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree in Newtown, Connecticut, killing his mother before murdering 26 students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School; in 2007, 32 people were killed in the Virginia Tech massacre.

Is Barack Obama correct that mass killings don't happen in other countries? | PolitiFact

The White House argues that Obama's second sentence qualifies the first, and added that PunditFact rated Mostly True the claim that "Americans are 20 times as likely to die from gun violence as citizens of other civilized countries." However, that claim refers to gun violence generally, not mass killings specifically, the topic of Obama's comment.

Why?
Don't tread on me!
I may be armed.

Bullies, idiots and evil gets culled one way or another.

I agree, but the title of this thread is "why so many shootings in the USA vs the rest of the world".

Too many people point the finger at the accessibility of guns in the USA, but when you look a bit closer at the data we have a statistical anomaly skewing those results.

School shooting and/or mass shootings in general are just a small drop in the bucket in the overall homicide rate in the USA.

It's disgusting that liberals use these tragedies to further their political agenda.

If it were about saving lives, then we need to address the biggest culprit first. But it's not about saving lives (reducing the overall homicide rate), but rather using peoples emotions to further a political agenda (disarming America).

Mod cut: Quoted post deleted.

There is no universal definition of mental illness.

The trend away from institutionalizing the " mentally ill" is global.

States have the ability to temporarily detain an individual for " observation for X hours when it appears they may pose a threat to themselves or others. Observation is not a diagnosis. Rarely do such temporary detentions result in a court order to extend the observation.

Highly unlikely, Cruz' public defender will be successful in persuading the court his/ her client is mentally incompetent. That option went out the window when Cruz dropped his gun and ran out of the school with all the other students. He knew the diff between right and wrong.

Americans have always been nuts. There’s nothing new under the sun.

The first Americans were religious nuts (remember the Salem Witch Trials?). After the founding, huge numbers of religious nuts came here where they could practice their nuttery without state interference (freedom of religion). And of course, we have our own home-grown religious nuttery (Mormonism, Christian Science, Scientology, etc.)

Thank you, Founding Fathers, for “freedom of religion.” Thanks to you, every nutty religious group from Europe came here, making us one the only first world country where religion is still dominant. I suspect that the results are not what you intended.

Lol. You should have googled "statistically significant" before using it.

Mental illness is a chemical imbalance and is genetic. In the future we could start screening the mentally ill and rendering them sterile so mental illness is not passed to the off-spring. The mass shooting problem is entirely caused y the mentally ill.
There is a component of genetics associated with some mental illness. No doubt we hall have a " raving lunatic" in our genetic history. Genetics is not however the only or even primary cause of mental illness.

What objective criteria could be used to screen/ evaluate people for mental illness to determine who should be sterilized?

The state investigated Cruz in 2016 when his school became aware of an online video he posted of himself while cutting his arms/ expressing a desire to buy a gun as well as a Nazi symbol and racist hate speech on his backpack. His adoptive mother disclosed his depression, being on the autism spectrum and AHAD. She had taken his air rifle away from him because he targeted rodents in the back yard.

He was recieving professional treatment and was compliant with his medications. The state closed the case.

There was no basis to seek a court order to declare him mentally defective, let alone institutionalize him.
