Handguns are carried because they can be put away leaving your hands free for other task. When you know you are going into a gunfight you carry a long arm. Once upon a time US policed carried a shotgun, since a few years before the North Hollywood bank robbery with the body armored gunmen, with rifles. Because at combat ranges with a rifle armed foe they could not get close enough to hit their unarmored heads with a handgun or shotgun pellet.

It seems obvious that these Deputies or civilians deputized into the role are initially only being tasked to engage active shooters and not perform other standard police functions. Otherwise the rifles would be locked up leaving their hands free for the more numerous and millions of times more likely to occur normal police task.. And assuming the Deputy wasn't injured in the arm demanding one handed shooting using a longer barreled rifle or carbine is more accurate than any hand gunner at any range.

Dude a "zone" won't do anything. Just like speed limits.

So then what do you propose? More guns? Because there's only 2 true solutions here. More guns or no guns.

What changed here?

I thought they had an armed School Resource Officer. They haven't yet explained why that did no good, other than he never came in contact with the shooter.

What is the Sheriff actually saying.

The SRO will be armed with something different. There will be more LEO at the schools?

Well, you can't realistically get rid of guns. So, which direction do you think?

So they are going to have armed guards for the next shooting that may be a decade away, sounds reasonable in an alternate universe. Once again addressing the symptom rather than the disease.

You can go both ways. Think about it.

I'm for no guns. Because we can be a civilized society without the need for ownership of them. If you need a gun for x reason, rent one. Simple as that.

After Sandy Hook it became LAPD policy for all officers to randomly visit a school everyday to supplement the LAUSD police officer normally on site. Most schools are to large to be protected by one officer. Just as the Florida killer was reported to have used the fire alarm system to defeat the lock down defense one officer's movement can be planned for to insure a few magazines were emptied before an officer heard the report and started to move to engage an active shooter.

Hence the calls for teachers and other non security specific staff to be auxiliary armed guards in addition to their primary job and this Sheriff wanting to deputize volunteer guards since there is no way to tax enough to pay for professional police, and probably not civilian armed guards either to cover all targets. but it can make it harder.

But of course with all the extra people armed who watches the watcher? And when does one of all these extra gunmen forming security teams snap just like those who do not work or volunteer for security work snap?

Sandy Hook wasn't a hint to get on this a little quicker?
The day of waiting is over.
