[/b]A young relative of mine forwarded a very relevant tweet: "If we require teachers to carry guns, we should also require the President to read books".
Nobody is advocating to REQUIRE teachers carry guns. There should be a VOLUNTARY program like the airline pilots have, and maybe not even teachers, just administrators. You may want to communicate that to your relative. He's wrong. I bet the President read a lot of books at Wharton.
"Armed teacher" is expected to be a gun fighter. Do you think a normal teacher is capable of engage in a gunfight in school crowded with students?
Another point: little children, especially, turn to their teachers for reassurance, security and comfort.
In an emergency, how is a kindergarten or primary grade teacher supposed to draw, aim and shoot accurately while being swarmed by fifteen or twenty panicky, crying little kids who want hugs?

This point is entirely lost on the media and the gun control advocates. Choice does not appear in the lexicon unless it applies to women's reproductive organs. Schools and districts should be allowed to make a choice and have programs that all agree upon.

I bet he went for Classic Comics instead, and that he hasn't willingly cracked a book since.
I keep reading on this thread "teachers are there to teach", anyone paying close attention to the results of their "efforts" should think that is a joke. The schools are basically brainwashing these kids into a socialist mindset, anti constitution, anti christian and pro gay, yada, yada, yada.
Been a while since you've been in a public school classroom, eh? None of what you state is accurate.
Do you feel that those whose teaching topics or methods conflict with your notions deserve to be endangered?

Oh, we'd let Trump choose what books to read.
Just as long as he would read SOMETHING....
(And yes, I do understand very well that the proposal to arm teachers would include voluntary participation. It's just that the very notion of teachers carrying firearms is antithetical to the history and traditions of our country and our society, and is a very sad commentary on current times, that such a preposterous idea would even be raised, much less be taken seriously. It indicates a great deal of desperation.
It's also telling that those who are all for it and who objected to my post completely missed the irony and reflectiveness in the quotation from my cousin, a young mother who works with children and books and who is very, very concerned about our country's current direction. My cousin and I descend from a very long line of teachers and educators, almost all in the public sector, and dedication to learning and children's well-being is strong in our family. As is dedication to reading).

What is stopping school districts from doing this now?

I am very concerned about the direction this country is taking because it is full of stupid people. That does not change my mind on people or school districts having choices on how best to protect their students. Keep the federal government out of it.
And I don't care what Trump or Obama read.

Many states do not allow guns on campus.
