Officer safety, job #1

Sad part is they will suffer no consequences and the school officer immediately retired with full benefits

Maybe so, but what makes you think that if a shooting occurred at another school that a resource officer or the local sheriff deputies will come in to exchange fire with the shooter. Most likely not. Maybe not because of cowardice but the benefits may not be worth the risks, in their mind.

The only ones who will be able to deal with it will be a SWAT team, which might take 20-30 minutes to arrive.

People don't get it.

This isn't about these 4 guys. It's about almost any 4 guys in the same situation, sheriffs or not. We've seen it happen over and over. Unless you are a front line soldier, seeing this and living it everyday, you won't be able to deal it. And even trained soldiers sometimes can't.

It's foolish to hope that putting cops in schools can solve this problem. A cop in a school might have to deal with a kid killer once in his lifetime. The vast majority never will. When it does happen to the unlucky few, they'll no more be able to deal with it than the kids will.

Oh I don't know, maybe because THAT'S THEIR FREAKIN' JOB? That's why we give them guns and body armor in the first place.

I want to see if this morally despicable sheriff who deflected blame onto the NRA at that Two-Hours Hate thinly disguised as a "town hall meeting" knowing full well what his underlings had done will have the decency to step down and disappear quietly or if he will have the arrogance to serve out his term and possibly even run for re-election.

An AR-15 turned 17 youthful and alive kids into inanimate objects, and you blame the government.

Sounds about right.

And I don't blame them.

This was a once in a lifetime event for these guys. By its nature, it always will be.

5 year old training, a couple of annual refreshers are worthless it confronting something like this. Only combat soldiers would charge an concealed enemy in a fortified position.

Anyone who would rely on deputies, "resource" officers (whatever they are), or least of all teachers is deceiving himself. No one should rely on these people to confront armed killers with any degree of confidence.

Hoping that sheriffs and teachers can protect kids from mass murder is inviting more of it.
My understanding is that prior to Columbine, most officers were trained to wait for specialized units (aka, SWAT) before engaging in such a situation. However, since then many departments have trained officers to engage immediately. I have no idea how the officers in question were trained, but its entirely possible that they had outdated training.

Something else to consider: there are circumstances under which engaging is such a situation would be suicide. It's the same reason firefighters won't entire some burning buildings. Charging into an unknown situation (nobody knew how many shooters there were or what kind of weapons they had) armed only with a handgun may seem heroic, but it could have easily resulted in more dead bodies. The bottom line is this: until we know what kind of training these officers had, how much information they had about the situation in front of them, and what their orders were, condemning their inaction is premature.

Makes you think about people who say they will just wait for the police. The response is usually they are too late, now it is going to be if they get there, will they do anything?

Only an idiot thinks the gun walked into the school and shot people.
